I find it curious how other people like doing only one thing. I find all areas of creativity fascinating and rewarding and each topic brings it's own pool of knowledge to the table. The most surprising thing is how the knowledge gained from one topic has a knock-on effect to all the others. It lends perspective.
Designing for web and application UX & UI is a wonderfully controlled process. It's a clean environment and having a methodical, organised and connected style of working brings good results. Art and illustration are somewhat more messy, both figurativly and literally, requiring a more abstract approach to bring out the most creative results. Products and furniture require a more abstract way of thinking at the start, but then also the more controlled methodical side when it comes to making it a reality. And straight away we have an overlap of design processes.
Having this breadth of skill and knowledge also enables me to fill in the gaps that companies most often find a problem. The classic example is the creative frontend designers not understanding the backend developers and vice versa. Having a deep knowledge of both sides closes up that gap, reduces potential mistakes and ultimately achieves better results.
